Welcome to the third gathering of the season with guest Marshall Trammell who is here IN PERSON, new tunes, and a salivating taste experiment with chocolate chilli and soy sauce caramel ice cream from Hallaisen! As always in Studio 207 and Online! Come join on Wednesday the 27th of October – and bring your friends!

Listening host Peter Meanwell has the playlist ready and joining us for the first time in Bergen is our very own Artist in Residence Marshall Trammell who will also pick out some tracks to share! Marshall is an experimental percussionist, composer and archivist, and is also known as Music Research Strategies (MRS). He has since the Autumn of 2020 been working with us and our collaborators remotely from his home in Oakland, California. BLC is the last thing he will join us for during this stay in Bergen, but don't miss out on the workshops and concert happening with him before then! You can read more about this HERE: www.borealisfestival.no/en/join-in-on-on-exciting-happenings-with-marshall-trammell-in-bergen/

Together we will listen to a new track from Tanya Tagaq called Tongues. Tanya is an Inuk improvisational singer and avant-garde composer, whose experimental music joins landscape, culture and resistance through her charismatic throaty voice. We will also listen to Yoruba music performed on Bata drums by Cuban group Abbilona.

New to the season is that we will give our taste buds an experience too, and for each BLC we invite food enthusiasts in Bergen to create a tiny edible experiment to spice up the listening. This time we have got together with Hallaisen! They will deliver two flavours: a simultaneously cold and warm Chocolate Chilli, and a punchy yet polite Soy Sauce Caramel ice cream, to all you adventurous listeners!

This year’s BLC welcomes everyone who is physically present in Bergen, but also those who wants to listen in from home. Come join us in Studio 207 or Online!

PROGRAMME:
20.00–21.00 We listen to music (Studio 207 & Online)
21.00–22.00 Taste adventure and more listening (Studio 207)

Borealis Listening Club is relaxed and informal, and we also want to listen to the music that you like or are kicking on right now. Send us suggestions on e-mail (blc@borealisfestival.no), Facebook or Instagram, and we might listen to the music you have suggested.

The Borealis Listening Club is a monthly free event hosted by Borealis – a festival for experimental music that has existed since 2015. BLC is organised on the last Wednesday each month, and gathers all adventurous listeners to simply: listen to music and sound. It’s a space to listen together and talk about music outside of the mainstream, and is open to everyone from first time listeners to seasoned professors.

These 3 groups have been working in the performing arts investigating the technological possibilities from different perspectives. The program tries to open the field from the body and spatial concept and the interaction with the audiences, to the technologies we can use. From body movement performances to body signalling like EEG or Artificial Intelligence devices interpreting the spatial situations as a whole.

Workshop SelfHosted by Critical Engineering Working Group

NOTE: The workshop will be hosted in NOVEMBER. Dates will be updated.

Decentralise! This 4 hours walks participants through the process of setting up their very own server on the Internet, complete with webmail, cloud, VPN, gallery and website services, scalable to hundreds or thousands of users.
Those interested in serving from home can bring in a PC to wipe and re-purpose as a low-bandwidth server on the Internet. Others wanting a high-traffic, media-rich solution will be encouraged to choose and register a geographically-local server package in class such that they can be guided through a complete install (typical monthly fees are 5 to 15 EUR).

Good server-side security practices are covered, from disk-encryption to password-management and firewalling. The basics of the UNIX command line are also taught such that participants can securely log into their server and administer it regardless of their physical location. It takes just one in a community to give the gift of high-quality, low-carbon Internet infrastructure - to free yourself and others from centralised and privacy-eroding services (like GMail, DropBox and Flickr).

No prior experience is necessary, although attention to detail and note-taking skills are important.
